Innnovative design and material solutions Working for Durrance Developments, PRO Structures received one of its most challenging design briefs to date – to carry out the foundation and superstructure design for an exclusive detached four-bedroom home incorporating an inset 2nd floor which is to be completely open and column-free, with a dual-aspect folding door, constructed in ICF to facilitate a self-build project while saving money and creating excellent insulation.

The south-westerly elevation is to be cantilievered out completely, while being open plan and unsupported by internal columns, so our main challenge was to design the concrete reinforcement in the supporting walls to ensure the building’s stability. To do this, we used Masterseries finite element 3D modelling work out the stresses on the concrete walls and design accordingly.

Similarly, the building’s concrete raft foundations needed to be modelled using finite element analysis in order to ascertain the level of theoretical slab deflection affecting the design.

Building work has now started on site and aims to be completed in summer 2019, when it is anticipated to go on the market for in excess of £1m.
